The Midwest region consists of nine states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) with a total population of roughly 52 million. A recent study found that there are approximately 15,000 individuals living with SCD in the Midwest. The nine states listed above have joined together to improve outcomes for individuals with SCD in the Midwest.
The Cincinnati Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center coordinates the Sickle Treatment and Outcomes Research in the Midwest (STORM) regional sickle cell network. The network is made up of the STORM Regional Coordinating Hub (RCH) and Clinical Community Spokes (CCS) – well-qualified partners from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Ohio, plus a clinical affiliate in South Dakota.
The STORM RCH and CCSs work closely with community-based organization partners and the STORM Community Advisory Board (CAB), consisting of patient and family member partners across the region.
